My travels / Mexico / Guanajuato

Mexico · one unhurried day

A day in
Guanajuato

Colourful rooftops, little lanes, a hilltop view and a long lunch. A whole day, taken slowly.

A Saturday outing from San Miguel de Allende, or a day in its own right. This is a loose walking order, with the museum left optional.

Your ticks stay on this device.

One thing at a time

A view, a wander and a meal are plenty. Keep the rest flexible and leave time for the journey home.

Cervantino in the streets

Leave room for the festival

If you visit during Cervantino, leave a little room for the street performances. Check the programme before fixing the day.

A pause for the procession

Stop for the music and dancing if a procession comes through, then pick up the walking route again.

Getting there & back

From San Miguel de Allende: choose your transport before fixing the shape of the day.

Bus + transfer into town

Search San Miguel de Allende → Guanajuato on Primera Plus. Leave from San Miguel’s Central de Autobuses on Calzada de la Estación. Guanajuato’s terminal is outside the historic centre: continue by taxi or a local bus towards Centro / Mercado Hidalgo.

Book the return too and allow time to reach the terminal. Departures and fares depend on your date.

With an open return, exchange it for a set time early in the day through the Primera Plus app, website or contact centre: Saturday evening buses fill up.

Check buses ↗︎

A door-to-door driver

Request a return quote with pickup in San Miguel and free time in Guanajuato. This is the simplest option if you want to skip the terminals; confirm the meeting point and return time.

Once in the centre, explore on foot. There are hills and steps: comfortable shoes, water and breaks help.

Just a little planning

Check theatre visitor access, museum hours and funicular service before going. In October, check the Cervantino programme too: events can affect crowds and visits.

Staying late or overnight? The callejoneada, the evening student serenade through the lanes, usually starts around 8 pm.

Support local women

If you can afford to and would like to, consider donating to Red Nacional de Refugios to support women and children experiencing domestic violence.

I don’t receive any money or commission from these donations. Supporting local women matters to me, and this is one small way to give back to the places I visit. It takes all of us to stand against gender-based and domestic violence.
