No rushing required. Mornings are for work. Afterward, a long lunch and at most one small outing. Keep several afternoons completely free.

Choose one day trip

Monte Albán is the easier fit for our pace. The other trip does not count toward progress; your saved ticks stay in place.

A few more possibilities. These don’t count toward the main checklist.

BEFORE WE GO

Just a little planning

Taxis for Día de Muertos. Book these before the weekend: a driver who takes us to Etla on Sunday, waits and brings us back (taxis there are scarce late at night); a ride back from Xoxocotlán on Saturday night, the busiest night of the year; and one back from the Xoxocotlán comparsas on Monday. Ask the hotel or host, and agree the price first: Oaxaca taxis don’t use meters. Getting there is easy; it’s the return that needs booking.

Book ahead. The Jardín Etnobotánico tour, the cooking class and Mezcaloteca.

Hierve el Agua. It sometimes closes over community disputes: check the week before.

Then the bus to Puerto Escondido. Nothing here needs to become a race.

Start fresh?

This will clear the ticks for this Oaxaca checklist on this device.

Support local women

If you can afford to and would like to, consider donating to Red Nacional de Refugios to support women and children experiencing domestic violence.

I don’t receive any money or commission from these donations. Supporting local women matters to me, and this is one small way to give back to the places I visit. It takes all of us to stand against gender-based and domestic violence.
